It seems you can’t go into a bar or pub nowadays without facing an array of craft beer options which boggle the mind.

The rise of IPA and other styles of ale has proliferated the drinking habits of nearly all men and women except the staunchest of stout evangelists.

We all know the hoppy beverage is a delight on the tastebuds but it’s certainly not a delight on the waistline.

In fact, there’s an even more undesirable effect of drinking hoppy beers: the development of man boobs.

Man boobs, or in common parlance ‘moobs’, have been linked to the phytoestrogens present in hoppy ales.

These hormones basically act as estrogen in the body and contribute to the development of man boobs.

However, it’s better news for women as the presence of these phytoestrogens could help those who are going through the menopause, reports the Independent.

In the book, Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers, by Stephen Harrod Buhner, he makes the connections between hoppy beers and moobs.

He also notes there might be another, more undesirable side-effect of drinking the golden nectar.

Buhner said:

[From] long-term exposure to the estrogenic properties of hops, [they] eventually have difficulty sustaining an erection.

That’s right folks, there’s another reason to stay away from the craft beer, you might not be able to get a hard on.

This phenomenon has even got a name: ‘Brewer’s Droop’, showing just how pronounced this problem is.

One thing you can do to combat this is obviously exercise – as well as burning off excess fat, the exercise will result in the increased release of testosterone, combating the fatty man boobs.

Eating green foods like spinach and kale can also help with reducing the effects of phytoestrogen while getting rid of those pesky excess pounds.

So forget the obligatory kebab after a night on the town, get in your cupboard and dig out the blender.
