A 20-year-old waitress from New Jersey received a tip of ‘LOL’ from a table of eight people who were displeased with a one hour wait for their grub.

Waitress Jess Jones has been working for D’Jais Bar and Grill for the summer to put herself through university. She posted a photo of the receipt on Facebook, which has spread like wildfire and sparked a Curb Your Enthusiasm ‘to tip or not to tip’ debate around the web.

Servers in New Jersey make just $2.50 (£1.60) an hour plus tips. Non-tipped servers earn $8.38 (£5.50). As a tight arse Australian that once travelled around America, I quickly discovered that it was customary for diners to leave tips of at least 15 per cent – which would’ve been a handy $17 (£10.78) from a bill of $112 (£70.80).

I would have preferred a $0 tip than a ‘LOL’ tip but, as a waitress, bad tips and harsh notes are all part of the job. Even though the diners waited an hour to eat, they remained satisfied with filled drinks and proper notice that the kitchen was a bit busier than normal.

It sounds like she did what she could during a rough as guts shift and I personally am usually pretty happy with filled drinks (especially if it was beer).

The Mayor of the Belmar district in New Jersey, Matt Doherty, said: “If you visit Belmar please treat the hardworking men and women in our service industry with the same respect you would expect at your job. This is ridiculous.”
