American McGee’s Alice and its sequel Alice: Madness Returns have established themselves as cult classics, with a devoted fanbase crying out for a third game in the psychological horror series.

Good news then, as American McGee himself has only gone and confirmed that a third game is officially in development. It’s called Alice: Asylum, and despite being in the early stages of life, it’s looking just as unsettling as fans could hope for.

American confirmed in a blog post on his site:

American is hard at work on design, art, and story for the next chapter in Alice’s adventures. “Alice: Asylum” will present the story before “American McGee’s Alice,” with young Alice fighting through the trauma of losing her family.

It’s looking like the latest game will be relying on the support of Patreon and the fans, as American goes on to urge those interested to follow the game’s progress on social media.

You can even get “directly involved in the feedback process” via a dedicated Discord Server by supporting the game on Patreon. Backers can also get access to pre-production art, design, and planning this way. There’ll also be a few physical goodies.

It seems to be going pretty well so far, with American taking to Twitter to celebrate the fact that the game has already hit over 3,222 backers on Patreon.

There’s no release window for Alice:Asylum just yet. That’s understandable, given how early on in development the project is right now.

As always with fan-backed games, we could be in for a pretty long wait. Hell, there’s no real guarantee at this stage that the game will come out at all, but hopefully the Alice franchise has enough love behind to propel Asylum towards reality.
