A Resident Evil Netflix Show Is In The Works

The Resident Evil renaissance (Resinaissance?) is in full swing.

2017’s Resident Evil 7 gave the survival horror franchise a much-needed shot in the arm, and the Resident Evil 2 remake is on track to be the best selling game in the series.

As if that wasn’t enough, a new report from Deadline suggests that a live-action Resident Evil TV series is in development over at Netflix. As we all know, Netflix originals have a habit of being really rather good (Daredevil, Stranger Things, Orange Is The New Black, to name just a few).

The report suggests that the new show will be developed by German production and distribution company Constantin Film, the same studio that gave us those… interesting Resident Evil movies starring Milla Jovovich.

Unlike the movies however, which only loosely adapted the video games, the new Netflix show is said to plan on diving deep into Resident Evil lore, and will even expand upon its already considerably large and occasionally convoluted mythology.

The series will focus on the villainous Umbrella Corporation, and examine how the company – and the world – handled things in the wake of the T-Virus outbreak and the rise of all those pesky zombies.

From the sounds of it, that would place it fairly early in the timeline of the video games – around Resident Evil 2 and 3, but mercifully before the divisive Resident Evil 6.

The project is in its very early stages, Deadline reports, but apparently we can expect plenty of Easter eggs and classic Resi style action set pieces. Give me one Jill Sandwich to go, and I’ll be a happy customer.

We have no details on a cast, crew, or showrunner just yet, but there’s talk that the new show will tie in to the previously confirmed Resident Evil movie reboot, of which we also currently know very little.

For now, you can enjoy the excellent Resident Evil 2 remake, which is out today (January 25). In our review, we called it “dread incarnate” and a new high for the classic series.
