Do we have any Age Of Mythology fans in the house? I should hope so, given you clicked on an article that’s clearly all about the mythological spinoff to the excellent Age of Empires series.
Age of Mythology doesn’t seem to get the same amount of attention and love as Empires, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t one hell of a game. In just four months following its launch in 2002, Mythology managed to shift over 1 million copies. That’s not a bad bit of business.
The good news is that Microsoft doesn’t seem to have forgotten about Age of Mythology, and recently teased that a sequel, remaster, or follow-up of some kind is absolutely on the cards. Age of Empire Creative Director Adam Isgreen said as much to Eurogamer during E3.
He explained:
It’s great to see how much love there is for Age of Mythology, ’cause I love it too – it’s more of a… less accurate history. It’s super loose, people just have fun, and I love that too. After we get through the Definitive Editions for the three here, and 4 is kind of rolling. Then we’re going to look back and see what we can do with Myth. Because I love Myth, we’re not going to leave it behind, we’ll figure out what to do with it then.
It’s certainly an exciting time to be a fan of the Age franchise, especially given the renewed focus on bringing the games back into the public eye. A Definitive Edition of Age of Empires is already out of course, while AoE 2 and 3 were confirmed to be getting the same treatment in 2017, along with the reveal of Age of Empires 4.
Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is due for release this Autumn, while AoE 3 has yet to receive a release window. Both remasters are being worked on by an internal team at Microsoft dedicated to Age of Empires, with help from indie studio Forgotten Empires, who previously worked on a few AoE remasters – including 2014’s Age of Mythology: Extended Edition.
Meanwhile, Age of Empires 4 is being developed by RTS specialists Relic Entertainment. We don’t know exactly when to expect it, but Microsoft promises more news will come before the end of the year.
While we wait for further news regarding the future of Age of Mythology, Isgreen promised that a patch is coming to the 2014 Extended Edition “very soon”, which will address a number of exploits that the team knows players want gone.
