EARespawn Entertainment’s free to play battle royale Apex Legends has proven to be a massive hit for EA since it launched for PS4, Xbox One, and PC at the start of 2019.
As such, it probably won’t come as a surprise to you that EA has confirmed the game will be coming to mobile devices, while the publisher is also in “advanced negotiations” to launch Apex Legends in China.
EAApex Legends is already hugely popular on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and now it’s coming to a new platform and a new market. As part of publisher Electronic Arts’ earnings report today, CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed that a mobile version of the battle royale game is in the works, while EA is also in “advanced negotiations” to launch Apex Legends in China.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson explained during the publisher’s earnings report:
We are hugely excited about the future of Apex Legends … Engagement is strong, and we have big plans for the Legends and the world they compete in. We’re in advanced negotiations to bring Apex Legends to China and to mobile, and we will update you on time frames when those negotiations are concluded.
While there’s no release date for Apex Legends mobile yet, it’ll probably be a good few months at least before we finally see it. It makes great sense for EA to get it out sooner rather than later though, especially since rival battle royale titles PUBG and Fortnite are already available on mobile.
EAWilson also revealed that Apex Legends is officially the “fastest-growing” title in EA’s history. According to the publisher, the game has reached an impressive 50 million players, with almost 30 percent of Apex Legends players “new to EA.”
Wilson said:
We’re incredibly excited and humbled by the passion that fans around the world have for Apex Legends. We’re now very focused on delivering for this massive global community with a long-term live service, including new seasons with more robust Battle Pass content, new legends, and exciting evolutions to the in-game environment.
Wilson also teased that the first details about the Season 2 of Apex Legends will be announced at the EA Play event at E3 2019 in June. Clearly, this is just the beginning for Respawn and EA.
In other EA news, the publisher discussed how Anthem not performing quite how it expected would influence and inform the publisher’s strategy for releasing online titles going forward.
