PlayStation 4 owners everywhere were outraged recently when, after months of delays, Bethesda finally confirmed that mod support would not be coming to Sony’s console.
This means no mod support for Fallout 4 or the upcoming remaster of Skyrim. Xbox One users meanwhile, are able to enjoy this cool new feature, while PC gamers… well, they sit and laugh at the rest of us because they’ve always had mods.
It was never made entirely clear why Sony and Bethesda reached this impasse, but by all accounts it seems the system they had been working on just doesn’t sit right with Sony.
There is a glimmer of hope though; In Bethesda’s initial statement, it mentioned:
We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience.
Of course, while a cynic might have assumed the developer was simply trying to placate an angry crowd, Bethesda’s own Pete Hines recently reaffirmed this sentiment on Twitter.
Hine’s tweet came in response to a video from YouTuber Hey I’m Starlord, who outlined three viable alternate routes Bethesda could take for mod support on PS4.
So, the good news is that Bethesda acknowledges there are options, and that they are activiely looking at these options. While it’s wise not to celebrate yet, I’d say PS4 owners have a reason to be optimistic.
Now, let’s just hope they can get it sorted in time for Skyrim: Special Edition’s October 24 release (I doubt it, but we can dream).
