Activision just dropped the first trailer for the 16th game in the Call of Duty franchise, which finally proves beyond all doubt that the next game is called simply Modern Warfare.

Earlier reports suggested that the upcoming COD, developed by Infinity Ward, would be Modern Warfare 4, before it was rumoured that the 2019 release would in fact serve as a semi-reboot and omit the from the title entirely.

Mercifully, we now know for sure that it’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, so we can all stop arguing and speculating. Check out the reveal trailer below.

Modern Warfare will arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 25, and will have a single-player campaign – something that was missing from 2018’s Black Ops 4, which ditched a traditional single player mode in favour of its own take on the battle royale genre and a focus on zombies.

The trailer shows off a number of locations, including London’s very own Piccadilly Circus.

The original Modern Warfare was released back in 2007, and was also developed by Infinity Ward. The studio would go on to develop two sequels to Modern Warfare, followed by Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and Infinite Warfare.

Despite Infinity Ward’s subsequent output over the years, many fans of the FPS franchise still hold up the 2007 Modern Warfare as one of the most important shooters of all time, combining a gripping single-player campaign with outstanding online multiplayer.

2019’s Modern Warfare will act as a reboot of sorts for the series, and looks to return Call of Duty to gritty, boots on the ground action of earlier incarnations. Referring to two Call of Duty games that share the same name is definitely not going to get confusing, he said sarcastically.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is released October 25th.
