Of all the Star Wars characters to have been let down by the prequel trilogy, Darth Maul is easily the prime example.
Somehow George Lucas managed to take a fantastic idea for a character (along with an incredible, imposing design), and utterly waste it in a jumped-up feature length toy advert of a film.
As if this isn’t heartbreaking enough, you may remember that there was to be a Darth Maul game for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U – recently leaked concept art indicates that it actually looked pretty interesting.
Posted by developer Thomas Szakolczay on ArtStation (via Game Informer), the images show off some of the game’s characters, including Darth Maul (of course), as well a look at one of the game’s locations.
Check out Maul’s impressive designs below, along with a peek at some of the other intimidating-looking Sith who were set to appear in the game.
The project was apparently supposed to predominately serve as a prequel to Episode I, showing us the life of a young Darth Maul .
Dan Borth, the founder of developer Red Fly, said during a Reddit AMA a while back:
We wanted to show what he went through to become a Sith. Showcase the torture the Emperor put him through. Show how you as the player would have made the same mistakes and ended up a Sith.
Borth then revealed that developer Red Fly planned to pitch the Darth Maul game once more to current Star Wars sugar daddy EA, but by all accounts the publisher isn’t interested right now.
