It’s been the biggest ‘will they, won’t they’ story since Ross and Rachel, but as of today, we finally have confirmation that Capcom will be remaking Resident Evil 2.

In a video announcement, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi – the man behind the Resident Evil HD Remaster – announced that due to fans constant campaigning, the legendary horror title is being remade for modern consoles.

In the video, Hirabayashi explains how the decision came about:

You’ve been telling us for years that you want Resident Evil 2 to be remade, and we haven’t been able to make it happen… until now! We at R&D Division 1 will do our best to take on your feedback and deliver the gameplay experience you’ve been waiting for.

The long running saga is likely to have started when a fan-made remake began to gather attention on the internet, prompting Hirabayashi – a.k.a ‘H’ – to draft up a plan to make an official remake of the classic. After asking fans via Facebook if they would be interested, it seems the overwhelmingly positive response gave Capcom all the encouragement they needed for the Resident Evil 2 remake to shuffle into life.

Yoshiaki Hirabayashi says in the video that it may be some time before any updates are revealed about the project and no consoles have officially been named, but it’s a good bet it will be coming to Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
