Following the phenomenal success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, fans are keen to see what the Polish developer is working on next, but it looks like that we’ll have to wait a little longer.
All we know about Cyberpunk 2077 so far is that it’s a futuristic RPG, and… well, that’s pretty much it actually.
While CD Projekt Red will be announcing something at E3, they’ve made it very clear that it won’t be Cyberpunk 2077, so the speculation will rage on for a while yet.
CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwinski told Eurogamer:
It might happen that we will be at E3 and we will show something at E3, but I just want to make it clear it’s not Cyberpunk. We still have a lot of work to do with Cyberpunk.
So what do CD Projekt have up their silky sleeves for E3? A recent annual report from the company outlines “a new type of video game format previously unexplored by the studio.”
When Eurogamer asked Iwinski if it would be something to do with this, he simply replied with a coy “we will see”.
Eurogamer then asked if their E3 news was anything to do with The Witcher. Iwinski said that “time will tell”.
I’d be surprised if it was anything to do with The Witcher, as Iwinski himself recently said that after the Blood and Wine expansion, the company is done with the franchise for the foreseeable future.
Cyberpunk 2077 meanwhile, continues to sound very interesting indeed. Iwinski has acknowledged that it’s their most ambitious project to date, and could blow The Witcher 3 out of the water.
If you’ve played The Witcher 3, you’ll know that’s a very bold claim indeed.
It seems like the hype building around Cyberpunk 2077 is part of the reason that Iwinski and CD Projekt are done talking about the game for the time being.
He said:
Right now it’s the end of talking about Cyberpunk until we can go out there and show stuff and say, ‘Hey, here it is,’ because that’s how we do games. There is too much talking about what it possibly could be, and how big.
Seems fair enough. For now, take a look at this teaser. It’s all we have to go on for a while, so be sure to ration it.
One thing’s for sure – I don’t envy the guys that have to follow a game like The Witcher 3.
