The massively successful crowdfunding campaign to remake FPS classic System Shock has led to the title being confirmed for PlayStation 4, in addition to the previously announced Xbox One and PC versions.
With a week of funding still to go on Kickstarter, Nightdrive Studio’s System Shock has already sailed past the $900,000 goal – it sits at $1,090,934 at the time of writing, and is sure to rise over the next few days.
Project director Jason Fader wrote in a Kickstarter update:
When we launched this Kickstarter, supporting PS4 was a possibility, but we hadn’t started talking to Sony just yet about it. We were all focused on wrapping the demo up and prepping the Kickstarter. We already had strong contacts at Microsoft from prior projects, so supporting Xbox One was less of an unknown. After we saw the overwhelming demand for PS4, we reshuffled our priorities and focused on talking to Sony about making that happen. After a few weeks and lotttts of emails, we are officially on track for bringing System Shock to the PS4!
Fader also stressed that a PS4 version isn’t a Kickstarter stretch goal, but will be released on Sony’s console no matter what, as an extra ‘thank you’ to those who backed the game.
Remaining stretch goals include more locations, an extended story, a full orchestral score, more death cinematics, and plenty of other extra treats, which you can find here.
Plans for a remake of System Shock were unveiled last year after Nightdrive bagged the rights to the series. The original System Shock was released in 1994 by Looking Glass, many of whom eventually went on form BioShock developer Irrational Games.
A free demo of the game is currently available to download on PC. Again, head over the Kickstarter page to find it (and maybe chuck a few quid their way).
Fader said that System Shock should be coming to PlayStation 4 around early 2018, but crowdfunded games can sometimes take longer than expected.
