Great news – the excellent XCOM 2 is coming to consoles. You can expect it on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One September 9.

XCOM developer Firaxis has partnered with The Workshop (who also helped out on the PC version). They’ll be taking on the task of porting the turn-based strategy game to consoles.

Creative director Jake Solomon wrote on the PlayStation blog:

The incredible reception of XCOM 2 has been rewarding and humbling for the team, and we’ve known console fans have been clamoring to play the game too. As avid console players ourselves, we’re excited to work with The Workshop to bring XCOM 2 to all of our fans.

2013’s XCOM: Enemy Within was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Given that the sequel – released back in February – was a critical and commercial smash, a console release shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.

It’ll be interesting to see how certain elements from the PC version are carried over, especially considering that the game’s interface and the mod support feature were created with PC in mind.

Still, Fallout 4 recently paved the way for mod support on consoles, so perhaps Firaxis are looking to Bethesda for inspiration?

If you happened to completely ignore XCOM 2 the first time around, you play as the commander of a human resistance group who are trying to take back Earth from ‘dem pesky aliens.

Procedurally generated maps and genuinely challenging enemies made for a truly tough but ultimately rewarding experience – it’s well worth your time.

Hopefully the port does the game justice – XCOM 2 is definitely a game that deserves to be played by as many people as possible.
