People think that cross-platform gaming between Xbox One and PS4 is a legend reserved for the sweet dreams of gamers everywhere.
But this might not actually be the case, because players of Fortnite, Epic’s co-op survival game, are reporting the feature has quietly been switched on.
The comments have surfaced on Reddit, where people noticed something was afoot thanks to Xbox gamertags showing in PS4 matches.
The red alert was first noticed by Redditor PRE_-CISION-_ who spotted a space in a fellow gamer’s tag, which is not allowed on PS4’s systems.
Luckily, this gamer has both a PS4 and an Xbox One, so switched straight over to the rival system to do a quick check for the name and got ‘instant results’.
They wrote:
This is HUGE. Sony and Microsoft do not allow crossplatform play. To my knowledge this has never happened before. WTF just happened?
Fortnite just made console history. PROOF of cross platform play between XB1 and PS4!!!! from FORTnITE
There was some initial scepticism about whether the Xbox gamer had just linked his account to a PC, which would allow for cross-play, but video and screenshots of the gamer playing the Xbox version surfaced.
Cross-play was confirmed even further thanks to another Reddit post of a father and son playing together – one on Xbox and one on PS4.
The idea of cross-play has been touted for a while, but Sony aren’t really up for the development.
The cross-play seen here hasn’t been confirmed or denied by Epic, but it shows the technology is definitely there, if only console developers would let it happen.
