NexusModsSekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the latest release from Dark Souls studio From Software is already a pretty terrifying game, thanks to its intense combat and strange, otherworldly enemies.
While you explore Sengoku era Japan as a Shinobi warrior on an epic quest, you’ll mostly find yourself dealing with human foes – but every now and again you’ll come across a hulking monstrosity capable of picking you up and throwing you several yards – if you’re lucky.
If you’re unlucky, they’ll just stomp on your face and leave you to die.
From Software One of the earliest beasts you’ll run into in Sekiro is the Chained Ogre, a horrifying creature with flaming red eyes who poses a genuine challenge in game’s opening hours, especially if you haven’t picked up the trick required to defeating him.
When I was reviewing the game a few months back, I’m ashamed to say that the Chained Ogre had me on the ropes for a good long while. It actually got to the point where I considered handing the game off for someone else to review, because I was convinced I’d never get past this early game obstacle and see what the rest of the game had to offer.
It was, as I’m sure you can imagine, deeply stressful. As such, I revisit the Chained Ogre with a sense of dread, not helped at all by the fact a new mod has transformed him into the popular meme (and former children’s movie) character Shrek
‘Shrek the Ogre’ is the name this new Sekiro mod, and it’s available over on Nexus Mods. He moves just as the original Chained Ogre does, which frankly manages to make the whole encounter even more traumatising. We’re in his swamp, now.
I don’t think there’s any version of the Chained Ogre that I’d be happy to fight, if I’m being honest, but this green skinned monstrosity definitely gets a solid “no” from me.
It probably won’t be long until we see more Shrek characters make their way into Sekiro (or Shrekiro as it will no doubt soon be known), which is a chilling thought. Someone else has already managed to replace the Great Serpent with Thomas the Tank Engine, so clearly taste and decency are not considerations for these modders.
Remember, just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.
