There’s no denying that Capcom has had a phenomenal run of games over the past year or so, with Devil May Cry V, Monster Hunter World, and Resident Evil 2 proving massive hits – both commercially and critically.
With that in mind, I think we can all agree that Capcom announcing a remaster or remake of the beloved survival horror Dino Crisis at E3 2019 would be the juicy cherry on a particularly delicious cake.
While I’m personally not so sure such a project is on the cards – at least any time soon – a recent tweet from US retailer GameStop has left some fans convinced that we will indeed be seeing a Dino Crisis revival announced in LA this June.
As spotted by Jawmuncher on Twitter, GameStop (apropos of nothing) decided to tweet out to its followers to see who wanted a new Dino Crisis to be announced at E3. The tweet was later mysteriously deleted, but not before SteelSeries, who predominately manufacture gaming peripherals and accessories, replied to it with a cheeky wave.
Now, I don’t believe for a second this tells us anything about a new Dino Crisis. While it’s kind of odd that the tweet got deleted, it’s not that unusual for the social media account of a prominent games retailer to ask a question about a title it knows is fondly remembered, nor is it that weird that SteelSeries would reply. It’s all about that engagement, as the kids say.
A quick look at Jawmuncher’s Twitter account shows a person who is really, really into Dino Crisis, so we might just have to chalk this up to an overly eager fan who’s reading into something that isn’t there. I get it, we’ve definitely all been there.
With that said, rumours and rumblings of a return to the classic Capcom horror have been floating around for a while now. In December last year, Capcom told investors it suspected the Resident Evil 2 remake would be a massive success (which it was), and that the company planned to explore its stable of older games further to see if any other titles would benefit from a similar treatment.
While Dino Crisis wasn’t specifically mentioned at the time, fans – Jawmuncher included – have been very vocal indeed about wanting the see the franchise make a return, especially since the last game in the series was released way back in 2003.
For now, the wait for a new entry or remake continues… but the fact fans were prepared to lose their minds over one seemingly harmless tweet speaks volumes about just how ready people are for a Dino Crisis revival.
I mean, Capcom were willing to re-release Dragon’s Dogma for Switch, so clearly the company is up for anything. We’ll just have to wait and see.
