For a show that has been running for well over a half century now, it still blows my mind that we’ve yet to get a properly amazing Doctor Who video game.
Sure, there have been a few good ones, but for the most the iconic BBC sci-fi series has suffered from a string of mediocre releases that rob Whovians everywhere of the full blooded, immersive experience they so desperately crave.
Thankfully, Doctor Who: The Edge Of Time, a new Virtual Reality game published by PlayStack and developed by Maze Theory looks like it might just be the video game aspiring Time Lords everywhere have been praying for. Check out the trailer below.
Doctor Who: The Edge of Time will launch in September 2019 for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, HTC VIVE and the upcoming VIVE Cosmos, and is described as a “cinematic” adventure, featuring the voice of The Doctor herself – Jodie Whittaker.
From the official press release:
Doctor Who: The Edge Of Time will transport fans into a globally-beloved world of aliens, mystery and wonder, letting them embark on a brand-new and fully-interactive adventure, inspired by the show’s 55-year history and starring the Doctor’s current incarnation, played by Jodie Whittaker.
Players will go forth with The Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver and solve puzzles across a number of planets and timezones. They’ll have to deal with a number of iconic monsters from the show, including Daleks and Weeping Angels, the latter of which could make for some properly terrifying experiences in VR. We’ve also been promised a few “never before seen monsters” will be in the mix.
The game’s story sees The Doctor trapped at the end of the universe as a virus that “that threatens to rip apart reality itself” is unleashed. Players will be able to pilot the TARDIS as they explore worlds and times for “time crystals” that will save the universe.
Maze Theory Creative Director, Marcus Moresby said:
Maze Theory is committed to re-defining storytelling through awesome, innovative and immersive experiences in virtual reality. Doctor Who is an incredibly exciting and timeless franchise with a passionate and committed global fan base. We are looking to give them an entirely new experience; an opportunity to team-up with the Doctor and feel like they are in the show. This of course includes piloting the TARDIS, a dream come true for fans!
I’ll be honest, the prospect of being able to fly the TARDIS in VR is enough to get me to pick this one up. I can’t wait.
