Dying Light is easily one of the most popular zombie games of the last decade, so when Dying Light 2 was unveiled at E3 2018, the general consensus was that it was time to get very excited indeed.

Last year’s trailer revealed little, but did confirm that the sequel will take place years after the original game. The idea is that humanity has regressed somewhat, and slipped into a new dark age. It’s an intruiging idea, and I for one can’t wait to learn more.

Fortunately, Dying Light developer Techland recently took to Twitter to confirm what we all suspected; that Dying Light 2 will indeed have a presence at E3 2019.

It’s not yet clear exactly how much of Dying Light 2 we’ll see at E3, but I’d wager/desperately hope that we’ll be treated to a playable build. We’d previously heard that the parkour mechanics from the original game will be making their return, along with a massively expanded world – I’m eager to start exploring as much of this world as I can, as soon as possible.

It was also confirmed a few months back that the first game’s divisive (and arguably game breaking) grappling hook would be making a return, but Techland’s lead game designer Tymon Smektała told GamesRadar that the team feels confident they’ve fixed it this time around.

He explained:

There was some complaints in the reviews [of the first game] as to why we gave it so late because it’s so cool, but we wanted the player to learn the freerunning move-set first and then gain this tool as a reward. But there will be a grappling hook in Dying Light 2, and we are working to make sure it won’t actually break the movement this time!

The “modern dark age” setting of the game, meanwhile, is said to have taken inspiration from the likes of The Witcher 3 and Game of Thrones – so expect lots of weighty consequences and medieval style political intrigue, as well as branching paths and multiple options to choose from as you progress.

Techland is even working with the writers who created the excellent Bloody Baron questline from The Witcher 3, as the studio strives to create a narrative that’s “on par” with the gameplay.

There’s no release date for Dying Light 2 just yet (it was originally 2019 but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore), but expect plenty more coverage from us on the game as E3 rolls around.
