The Final Fantasy VII remake was unveiled to great acclaim and hype way back at E3 2015. Unfortunately, it’s nearly four years since that fateful day and we haven’t actually seen very much of the reimagined PlayStation classic since then.

Even the game’s director has previously said in interviews he reckons the game was announced a little too early, and Square Enix has said at various points that we’ll start to see more of the remake after Kingdom Hearts III finally launches.

As I’m sure you’ll be aware, Kingdom Hearts III did indeed finally launch just recently, so all eyes are now very much on Final Fantasy VII. What’s going down then, Square Enix?

While we still don’t know anything concrete, the publisher has Square Enix has released its earnings for the third quarter of its fiscal year 2019, and the year so far. It’s not the most thrilling read, but there is one interesting part that strongly indicates when we can expect to see the Final Fantasy VII remake finally grace our presence.

Essentially, Square claims it has great confidence in its 2020 fiscal year to deliver “record earnings” with a big increase in revenue during Q3 (October-December 2019). The publisher declined to share specifics on why this would be, but said announcements will start to come in the lead up to E3 2019.

Unless Square has some giant release that they’re super confident about that we haven’t yet heard about, the clear candidate would be Final Fantasy VII. Given the hype around the game and how well remakes seem to be doing right now, it’s the only game that really fits the bill.

If Square is indeed talking about FFVII, then we can expect some kind of gameplay deep dive and release date announcement at E3 this year, with the game arriving between October-December 2019.

There’s also the chance Square could be referring to The Avengers Project – it’s in-development Marvel title – but my money is very much on Cloud and the gang.
