Ahhh videogame movies. They build us up and knock us down so quickly. I’m looking pretty much directly at you, Uwe Boll.
Despite the decidedly patchy history of gaming movies, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford recently told Gamesindustry.biz he’s confident that the recently announced Borderlands movie will kick some serious ass with the producers behind the Marvel movie’s success at the helm – Ari and Avi Arad.
The father/ son duo have a pretty stunning track record of turning out good movies like Spider-Man, Iron Man and X-Men, so it’s already looking good for fans of the franchise.
Pitchford said:
I’ll tell you, I trust those guys a lot. Ari and Avi Arad are great and Ari really wants to be the guy to figure out how to make good video game movies. There are a lot of guys in video games who feel it’s a big risk to see a film made because so far there haven’t been great examples of great video game films.
And fortunately, the Arads figured it out when Avi was doing Marvel and did Spider-Man and Iron Man and X-Men; he figured out how to make comic book movies that are really fun and do right by the franchises that are really engaging and entertaining for large audiences. That gives me a lot of hope that working with them we can figure out a good film.
The Borderlands movie is being made over at Lionsgate Studios, and doesn’t have any release dates attached to it just yet.
Alongside the movie, Gearbox are also working on a third instalment in the main Borderlands franchise which is also without a release date. It’s not impossible that the two could collide in some way, though again, nothing has been confirmed.
