The news came from their PAX East panel, where Gearbox confirmed that they’d begin work on Borderlands after they wrap up production on Battleborn and its DLC. Intriguingly, it might not actually be called Borderlands 3 though.

Gearbox CEO and president Randy Pitchford said:

It’s no secret, obviously there’s going to be another Borderlands. We don’t even know if we’re going to call it that. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know.

Of course, while this is Gearbox’s third Borderlands game, it would be the fourth overall (not counting the Telltale games). The last game in the series, The Pre-Sequel, was developed by 2K Australia.

As for the talent involved, Battleborn art director Scott Kester will be moving on to Borderlands 3, while Mikey Neumann (the voice of Scooter) will be writing the game. It turns out Neumann has already been brainstorming possible characters: A son for Scooter, called Scooper.

Neumann said:

I did this whole Scooter thing, then I pitch-shifted it up like seven semitones so it sounds like a chipmunk and it was the funniest thing I’d ever heard.

Pitchford also hinted that we could see Easter eggs for Borderlands 3 begin to pop up in the DLC for Battleborn. Those saucy teases.
