God of War DLC Shelved For Being ‘Too Ambitious’

The PlayStation 4 exclusive God of War was undeniably one of 2018’s finest games, winning plaudits and smashing sales records left, right and centre.

The story driven experience felt pretty complete to most who played it, telling a single, cohesive story with a satisfying ending that dangles a few intriguing threads which will no doubt be picked back up in the sequel.

But this is the modern world, and it’s rare that a AAA release doesn’t come with some kind of season pass or extra content later down the line. As such, people were doubly surprised when God of War bucked this trend and released no DLC of any kind outside of a free New Game + mode that added a few new bits of gear.

It’s still not certain – though it is unlikely – that the game will ever get any kind of additional content somewhere down the line, but God of War director Cory Barlog has now revealed he had one idea for DLC that was shut down because it was “too ambitious”.

Barlog told Kinda Funny:

I had a really fun idea for a DLC that I only regret because I would love to have done that. But it was too ambitious. It would [have] ended up being its own thing. Rightfully so, everybody said, ‘Dude, this is crazy, this isn’t DLC, this is a little too big.

While we have no clue what this mystery DLC could have been, I’m extra disappointed it never saw the light of day given Barlog seems to think it would have been massive. Hopefully whatever his idea was, he carries it over into God of War’s inevitable sequel.

God of War is absolutely a satisfying and complete product as it is, but I certainly wouldn’t have minded the chance to spend a bit more time with Kratos and Atreus to tide me over during the long wait for the next instalment.
