Cory Barlog and Sony’s Santa Monica Studio’s bold, brilliant reinvention of the God of War franchise was deservedly hailed as one of the finest games of 2018, drawing equal amounts of critical acclaim and financial success.

Released in early 2018, God of War’s PS4 debut soared high above anybody’s expectations. It quickly became the fastest selling first-party PlayStation exclusive of all time, shifting five million copies in its first month.

This record might have been broken just a few months later by Marvel’s Spider-Man, but it says a lot about the success of God of War that it took a character with all the brand recognition and history of Spider-Man to take the crown from Kratos.

Sony recently confirmed that those impressive first month sales have now more than doubled, as God of War has officially passed 10 million sales worldwide. That a single-player exclusive managed this in just over a year is nothing short of remarkable, quite frankly.

The news came as part of a new presentation from Sony, in which it revealed that God of War has joined Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Remastered as one of the PS4’s best selling exclusives.

I’m not sure where exactly Marvel’s Spider-Man is at right now in terms of sales, but a few months back it was reported the wall crawler’s adventure had passed the nine million mark, so it’s well on its way – if it hasn’t made it already.

A few weeks ago, Sony released a genuinely fascinating feature length documentary called Raising Kratos, which details the whole development process of God of War.

It clocks in at around two hours, but it’s well worth your time. Of course, if you don’t have time to spare right now, I summarise the big points from the documentary right here.

Raising Kratos deals with everything from the initial pitches for the game, the delays and bugs that plagued the project, and the E3 reveal, to how the studio settled on casting Kratos and Atreus and what their actors thought of the game.

Having watched the documentary myself and getting a good look at how much passion and work Santa Monica Studio put into making God of War the best it could be, I’m honestly thrilled that the team gets to celebrate the game hitting this impressive sales milestone.
