We might not know much about Titanfall dev Respawn’s upcoming third-person Star Wars game, but we do know that EA weren’t at all keen on the idea to start with.
Respawn’s founder Vince Zampella has been talking to IGN about a whole heap of things, including about the studio’s hotly anticipated Star Wars adaption. Zampella says that he headed to J.J. Abrams’ production company while The Force Awakens was still shooting, where staff told him “You guys need to do a Star Wars game.”
Buoyed by the idea of his own take on the universe, Zampella pitched the idea with God of War III‘s director Stig Asmussen, but didn’t get the reaction he was gunning for.
He said:
We talked to EA about it. Initially, it didn’t look like it was going to happen. So we moved on and started creating an original IP with that team. EA came back–not that long ago; a year ago or something–and said, ‘Wait a minute, maybe we do want you to do a Star Wars game.’ We were able to work it out. We couldn’t be more excited; it’s a great team.
While Zampella didn’t go on to say whether that new IP is still in production, we do know that Respawn are working on at least two projects at the moment – Titanfall 2 and their Star Wars game.
Unfortunately we know precisely fuck all about the upcoming game other than that it’ll be third person, and that they’re the first external developer EA are working with since getting the Star Wars licence from Disney.
Other than that, we know that Capital Games, Visceral Games, DICE, BioWare and Motive are all working on Star Wars projects too. It’s a good time to be a Star Wars fan, that’s for sure.
