Despite the surprisingly vitriolic response to its announcement, Infinity Ward continue to push on with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

AusGamers recently interviewed Taylor Kurosaki and Jacob Minkoff of Infinity Ward, and the pair shared a few new details on what we can expect when the Call of Duty franchise finally takes to space.

One of the first things they were keen to stress is that Infinite Warfare is in no way related to Ghosts (Infinity Ward’s last Call of Duty game). Their new effort is billed as a fresh start, with new characters and a completely new setting.

Interestingly, a few narrative hints were also teased:

As Lt. Reyes, you begin the game with a mentality of ‘no man left behind’, or ‘you fight for the guy next to you’, as is a common theme in stories about war, as seen through the eyes of a grunt. Through the course of the game, you are field promoted to a position of leadership. At that point, you are now the Captain — the Commander of thousands of personnel.

This feature will also apparently play into the gameplay itself, as you get to issue orders and choose which missions your crew undertake. It’s unclear exactly how open ended this system will be, as the pair stress that Infinite Warfare is still a “linear experience”, at least in terms of narrative.

Kurosaki and Minkoff also discussed one of the most controversial aspects of the game – its space setting. The pair revealed just how far into the galaxy we’ll be going, confirming that Inifinite Warfare will be set firmly in our solar system.

Minkoff also explained a little bit about the scale of space combat:

In the Jackal, you’ll travel to and from multiple in-atmosphere and space free-flying combat segments against your enemy. You’ll be able to dogfight Settlement Defense Front fighters, carefully pilot your way through debris fields, or launch an offensive against enemy warships. You’ll call in Jackal air strikes while simultaneously fighting enemies on the ground.

It looks like Zero-G combat will also be returning for Infinite Warfare, but with a revamped system. You’ll be able to use RCS thrusters and a grapple, which will allow the player to close gaps and get to cover fast within Zero-G environments.

As Kurosaki and Minkoff both work on the single player side of Infinite Warfare, they couldn’t confirm anything regarding multiplayer – they did however, promise we’d be seeing something “really exciting” very soon.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare launches November 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A special edition of the is also planned – that’s set to come bundled with the universally acclaimed Modern Warfare.
