Square Enix is teaming up with Legendary Digital Studios on the project, as well as dj2 Entertainment. The latter company is also working on Sony’s dreaded Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
While it’s not known for certain at the moment whether we’ll be seeing a movie or TV show adaptation, a post on the Life is Strange Tumblr calls it a ‘digital series’, heavily indicating a TV format. Fitting, given the episodic nature of Life is Strange.
Greg Siegel, senior VP of development of production at Legendary said:
Life is Strange is one of those rare properties that combines incredibly developed characters and storylines with deeply engaging gameplay. It lends itself perfectly to live-action imaginings. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Square Enix, Dontnod Entertainment and dj2 to bring the world of Arcadia Bay to life in an exciting new way.
Jon Brooke, VP Brand and European Marketing at Square Enix added:
Now that the first episode of the Life is Strange game is free to download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC, there’s never been a better time to play or to introduce a friend to the beautiful world of Arcadia Bay.
There are no writer, directors, or actors attached to the project yet, but Legendary will look to fill those roles ‘shortly’.
It’s also unclear how involved developer Dontnod are with this adaptation, but Legendary referred to them as ‘DONTDOD’ in their announcement, which doesn’t bode terribly well.
If you’ve never played Life is Strange, you can download the first episode for free now – I strongly suggest you do just that.
