It was recently confirmed that Marvel’s Avengers is going to be a big part of Square Enix’s E3 2019 plans, and True Believers everywhere (myself included) are desperate to get a first look at the game in action.
Square Enix first announced the existence of an Avengers game back in 2017, though it was known then as The Avengers Project. The publisher confirmed at the time that it was a part of a bold new collaboration between itself and Marvel, and would be developed by Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider), with help from Eidos Montreal (Deus Ex Machina).
Check out the 2017 reveal below, because… well, it’s the only footage we have at the moment, I’m not going to lie to you.
We’ve heard very little on the game formally known as The Avengers Project since that 2017 reveal, though presumably Square Enix has been saving up a smorgasbord of information to dump on us come E3.
With that said, it doesn’t mean we don’t know anything about Marvel’s Avengers. Let’s take a look at what we do know so far.
Firstly, here’s what Marvel had to say about the game in the initial reveal two years ago:
The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. More details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018.
From that, we can glean a few things; namely that Marvel are LIARS because we didn’t see anything at all of the game in 2018. Moving on from that blatant violation of my trust, there are a few interesting tidbits hidden in the quote.
Tune into Square Enix Live E3 2019 for the worldwide reveal of Marvel’s Avengers.

It’s good to know that we’ll seeing a host of familiar characters and locations from Avengers and Marvel history. Going from the trailer, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor are set to appear in some capacity, but the narrator telling us “the time of heroes is over” as we see their broken weapons lying on the floor suggests a fairly bleak tone.
Some have suggested the game will be a MMORPG of sorts that sees you create your own hero and lead a new generation of Avengers, but it’s important to note that this is purely speculation. One thing that does work in favour of the idea of Marvel’s Avengers being an online game is Marvel’s curious use of the phrase ” a universe gamers can play in for years to come.”
Whether this means it will be the start of a series of games, or one online game that will be updated and tweaked for years remains to be seen, but I think it’s the former. I’ll explain why in a second.
As for the game’s story, the trailer once again suggests that it’ll be focusing on a turbulent time for Marvel’s heroes, who are perhaps either out of action of have been wiped out altogether.
We also know that a few months ago, Square posted a job listing for a narrative director who needs to have “10+ years of experience on highly-rated, cinematic AAA games”, and a “passion for games and ambition to create a Game of the Year title.”
Now, I’m personally not trying to take anything away from online games, but I don’t know how many Game Of The Year winners tend to focus on online elements. Traditionally, they tend to be single player focused adventures like Breath of the Wild, The Witcher 3, or God of War.
Based on that, there’s a good chance Marvel’s Avengers could well be a narrative driven single player adventure in a similar vein to the aforementioned titles – especially when you consider the majority of experience Crystal Dynamics has is with single player games such as Tomb Raider.
Much of this is speculation and wishful thinking based on the few facts we already have to hand, of course, but all will be made clear when Marvel’s Avengers is properly unveiled at E3 on June 10 at 2am UK time.
