Announcing The Xbox One S was just the beginning, as Microsoft have now also announced their rumoured beast-mode console – Project Scorpio.
So, what makes the Scorpio so cool? Well, let’s break down those stats. It will have 8 CPU cores, the most powerful GPU ever put into a games console and 6 teraflops of power, all coming together to render games in true 4K resolution at 60 hertz.
It will be able to play all existing Xbox One games, and it’ll be able to squeeze the extra juice out of games that previously fell short of the the expected benchmarks.
Speaking to The Verge, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer said:
The important thing for Scorpio is that it’s a dramatic step up for us in terms of hardware capability. Because as we saw 4K gaming and really high-end VR taking off in the PC space, we wanted to be able to bring that to console. Project Scorpio is actually an Xbox One that can natively run games in 4K and is built with the hardware capabilities to support the high-end VR that you see happening in the PC space today… when it ships it will be the most powerful console ever built.
No specific VR headsets have been officially mentioned, though it’s widely assumed that Microsoft are working with Oculus in that particular field. However, the recently announced Fallout 4 VR was mentioned as a title, which we know to be compatible with the HTC Vive.
There’s been no price point announced for the Scorpio just yet, though a rough release window of 2017 has been laid out.
