While PS4 and Xbox users can typically play with PC friends these days via cross-platform play, it’s extremely rare for a game to allow cross play between the two rival consoles themselves. Enter Modern Warfare

Much has been said about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare since its grand unveiling last week. While a lot of the focus has been on the game’s “shocking” and “thought provoking” campaign, we were also pleasantly surprised to learn that cross-platform play would be a key selling point of the 2019 CoD.

Activision

Activision announced in a statement soon after Modern Warfare was unveiled that the game would feature cross-platform play, and ditch the “traditional” season pass in an attempt to unify the community.

The publisher explained:

With the launch of Modern Warfare, the team is taking steps to unite the community. First, the team plans for Modern Warfare to be played together across PC and console through cross-play support. Also, the team is eliminating the traditional season pass, so that they can deliver more free maps and content as well as post-launch events to all players.

It’s important to note that Activision didn’t specifically mention cross play between PS4 and Xbox One in the above statement, and given Sony’s historic reluctance to actually allow such a thing – the company only started opening itself up to the possibility last year – most of us assumed that Modern Warfare would simply feature cross-play between PC and console, and not console and console.

As it turns out, Modern Warfare will in fact support cross play between PS4 and Xbox One, at least according to Candice Harris, who’s working on the latest CoD as a producer. In answering a fan on Twitter, she clarified that “everybody” will be able to enjoy cross play with “everybody.”

While it’s great to hear that PS4 users will be able to enjoy Modern Warfare with their Xbox One besties, we still don’t really know what to expect from the game’s multiplayer component, as Activision and Infinity Ward seem to be saving the multiplayer reveal for a later date.

We do know that the single-player’s narrative and progression will thread through the multiplayer modes in some shape or form, and the game is said to feature “several” traditional multiplayer modes, including an “all-new cooperative play mode, featuring a collection of strategic co-op missions.”

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 25, so expect further details on the game’s multiplayer to arrive in the next few months.
