Mortal Kombat 11 recently released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Despite a fair amount of controversy around the game’s approach to microtransactions, NetherRealm’s brutal fighter has been a critical hit.

According to Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment President David Haddad, the game has also been an incredibly successful commercial hit. Haddad has revealed that Mortal Kombat 11 enjoyed the best launch in the franchise’s 30 year history.

Haddad shared the good news during his panel at the 2019 GamesBeat Summit in Los Angeles (via VentureBeat). He praised the work of NetherRealm and series creator Ed Boon, who’s been with the iconic franchise from the very beginning. Warner Bros acquired the Mortal Kombat studio in 2009.

He said:

I couldn’t be more proud of that team and what they’ve done and the innovations they’ve brought to [Mortal Kombat].

While Haddad wouldn’t share specific sales numbers at this stage, he did confirm that Mortal Kombat 11 is the largest launch in Warner Bros Game’s history. He also confirmed that the studio will update the game with things like new characters and stages for “years” to come.

In our own review, we called Mortal Kombat 11 ” a clear contender for the best fighting game the current gen has to offer” but criticised the wealth of unlockables that are hidden behind confusing microstransactions and random chance.
