According to new reports, the director of one of the greatest gaming commercials of all time has been handed the reigns of a new Mortal Kombat movie.

You probably don’t know Simon McQuoid by name, but he directed the hugely popular PS3 commercial “Michael”. Check it out below to jog your memory.

The trailer was released in 2011 was part of Sony’s ‘Long Live Play’ campaign and according to Variety, helped land McQuoid the role.

The first Mortal Kombat movie made $70 million dollars and was admittedly one of the greatest gaming movies of all time. If you haven’t seen it, it’s really terrible – and that’s why it’s awesome.

The Mortal Kombat name is currently riding high on the success of Mortal Kombat X, but the movie apparently isn’t being rushed out to cash in on the hype. If you need to get your fix of Kombatting, check out the Warner Bros. Digital’s pretty awesome web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, first episode is below.

If they can capture even a fraction of the camp, cheesy awesomeness of the first movie, they’ll have my money. Here’s hoping!
