EA made a pretty huge Star Wars announcement yesterday (May 4), announcing that they’d be working with Titanfall team Respawn Entertainment to bring us a shiny new Star Wars videogame.
EA Studios exec Patrick Soderlund revealed on EA’s blog that the game will be an all-new third-person action adventure game set in the Star Wars universe. That’s essentially all we know at the moment, but it’s still pretty awesome news.
Soderlund said of Respawn:
I’ve had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Vince Zampella and his group. Their obsession with making games that feel amazing has helped make Titanfall one of the most successful new game launches of this generation. And now, with a new team led by Stig Asmussen, we get to see what they can do when you combine that great attention to gameplay with the power of Star Wars.
Development on the mysterious new title is being led by God of War 3 director Stig Asmussen, a chap with plenty of experience in making amazing action adventure games.
Plus, Asmussen is a huge fan of the franchise himself – he even published a blog post about how excited he is to be working on the game. Bless.
Asmussen wrote:
We [Respawn], like you all, have no shortage of Star Wars passion. The entire company erupted in cheers when it was announced that this would be our next endeavor.
He also promised to pay respect to the Star Wars legacy, going so far as to say that was one of the team’s central targets. He wished he could share more info about the game, but assured fans that we’ll find out more in due time.
EA currently also has multiple Battlefront sequels in development with DICE, while another entirely new project is coming from Assassin’s Creed producer Jade Raymond.
Meanwhile, Capital Games is working on the free-to-play game Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, while BioWare continues to toil away on Star Wars: The Old Republic. Visceral Games are said to be working on an open world title, but nothing has been confirmed in that regard.
And of course, we have a new LEGO game based on The Force Awakens coming soon, which should be great fun.
One thing is certain – It’s a pretty fucking good time to be a Star Wars fan.
