Nintendo have been famously protective of their IPs ever since the Super Mario movie came and rubbed poo in the world’s eyes. Still, they’ve started softening on this stance recently, and fans and filmmakers have been imagining the possibilities.
Most recently, The LEGO Movie and The Departed producer Roy Lee, spoke at the 2016 DICE Summit. and said that his “holy grail” project would be a LEGO Movie-style film that uses Nintendo characters. Yes. Yes please.
Lee said:
Zelda, Mario, the whole universe of characters, I feel like could be perfect for a LEGO Movie-type movie. I don’t have the rights to it, I would love to–that’s my holy grail.
The Lego Movie of course, combined everyone from Batman and Superman, to Han Solo and Gandalf the Grey, so maybe dreams can come true?
With the likes of Assassin’s Creed and Ratchet & Clank both getting movies that don’t look like complete toss, hopefully we stand on the cusp of a turning point for videogame movies, because I’ve been dying for Pixar to adapt The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for the past ten years.

After graduating from the University of Portsmouth in 2015 with a BA in Journalism & Media Studies (thanks for asking), he went on to do some freelance words for various places, including Kotaku, Den of Geek, and TheSixthAxis, before landing a full time gig at UNILAD in 2016.
