Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America President of 15 years and king of countless memes has announced that he’s stepping down. We never did find out about Mother 3

When Reggie first took to the stage during E3 2004, he proclaimed to the world; “My name is Reggie. I’m about kickin’ ass, I’m about takin’ names, and we’re about makin’ games.”

Since then, he’s been a popular industry figure among gamers everywhere for his sense of humour, approach to diversity in the industry, and his firm believe that video games should be fun above all else. It’s fair to say he’ll be sorely missed.

For the next 15 years, Reggie was one of the key faces of Nintendo, constantly appearing at E3 presentations and Nintendo Directs to announce the biggest and best games from the company.

The Reggie love certainly leaves big shoes to fill for his replacement, a man called Doug Bowser. Yes, that is his real name and no I won’t be making jokes about it. All the good ones have already been taken.

Here’s what Bowser had to say:

It has been my great fortune to work with and be mentored by Reggie for four years at Nintendo of America. And rest assured, we will continue to build on his work to evolve and expand our brand, furthering Nintendo’s global mission of creating smiles. There are millions more of those to come.

Reggie announced his departure in a heartfelt video which was released on the official Nintendo Twitter account. In it, he thanks the fans for their support over the years, and assures us Nintendo is in safe hands – even if those hands do belong to someone called Bowser.

He said in a subsequent press release:

Nintendo owns a part of my heart forever. It’s a part that is filled with gratitude – for the incredibly talented people I’ve worked with, for the opportunity to represent such a wonderful brand, and most of all, to feel like a member of the world’s most positive and enduring gamer community. As I look forward to departing in both good health and good humor, this is not ‘game over’ for me, but instead ‘leveling up’ to more time with my wife, family and friends.

Reggie will remain acting President until April 15. From all of us here at UNILAD Gaming, I’d like to sincerely thank you for bringing that much more joy to our industry sir – our body is Reggie for the future.
