Oddworld: Soulstorm Announced As Dark Reimagining For Franchise

Exciting times – there’s a new Oddworld game coming in late 2017. Developers Oddworld Inhabitants and Quebec-based Frima Studios are attached to the project, and it’s called Oddworld: Soulstorm.

There’s nothing in the way of images or trailers just yet, but we do have a few saucy story details to sink our teeth into while we wait.

According to the game’s shiny new website, we’re set to witness franchise mainstay Abe’s conflict with a terrifying machination in a fresh narrative inspired by the original games. Sounds promising.

Here’s what the site has to say:

Witness Abe’s horrifying conflict with a terrifying new machination. A fresh narrative – a complete story retake inspired by our original tale. A big visual and cinematic leap aiming to break new ground for Oddworld. Intelligent new mechanics, twisted new devices enabling highly explosive deviousness. A dark parable that tells an epic tale of a volatile society pushed to its limits.

Sounds like a pretty grim take on what was always quite a whimsical franchise – will it pay off? We’re promised a dark, twisted trip into Abe’s very heart and soul, which is what we’ve all been crying out for years, I’m sure.

Lorne Lanning, creator of Oddworld says:

Soulstorm gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle. Abe has a long way to go and plenty more adversity ahead. Soulstorm is going to be a much heavier trip for him.

Check out the trailer of the very first Oddworld game below to remind yourself what it’s all about.

There’s currently a very clever bit of marketing going on through the website and the official Twitter page. A currently blurry image of Abe will slowly become visible as more people follow the Twitter account. So if you want some Abe action today: go follow.
