Well well well, it looks like Persona 5 is indeed coming to Nintendo Switch –  sort of. While it’s not exactly the Persona 5 port any of us really expected, I’d say this is still a welcome surprise.

Atlus has officially announced the snappily titled Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. It’ll be a Dynasty Warriors style action JRPG, with Koei Tecmo’s studio Omega Force handling development duties.

Check out the announcement trailer below:

Atlus teased a mysterious project known only as P5S a few weeks back, leading many fans to believe that the long rumoured Switch port of the beloved and critically acclaimed 2017 RPG was finally going to be unveiled.

These rumours were lent further credence when Persona character Joker appeared as a playable DLC fighter in the Switch exclusive Super Smash Bros Ultimate (a game which recently hit an impressive sales milestone, by the way).

While Persona 5 could still show up on Switch one day, it’s important to note The Phantom Strikers is an entirely different game. It’ll be to Persona what Hyrule Warriors was to The Legend of Zelda; an action oriented spinoff in which you’re encouraged to hack and slash through hordes of enemies.

We don’t know much about the new game beyond these initial details, unfortunately. Phantom Strikers doesn’t even have a release date yet, but we’ll probably learn more as we approach E3.

Persona 5 Royal is another recently announced Persona project. It’ll be an enhanced version of the original game with new cutscenes and events, and it’s coming to PS4 in Japan in October before heading West in 2020.

That sure would be a great opportunity to bring the game to Switch too, wouldn’t it?
