Despite the hike, annual subscriptions will stay the same at £39.99, whereas the one month £5.49 and three month £11.49 options are set to rise. Sony are yet to detail exactly how much the payment plans will rise by, only that they will be “in line with market conditions”.

Sony said in a statement:

We are dedicated to bringing PlayStation Plus members the best possible service with the most compelling content. From 1st September 2015 we will be increasing the price of monthly and three month PlayStation Plus subscriptions in line with market conditions. We will continue to invest in PS Plus to ensure an unparalleled experience, featuring the best quality games and features.

Playstation 4 owners currently need the PS Plus service in order to play with friends online and access a host of free games, with the August collection being set aside for particular praise by fans and critics. The price change sounds like Sony are aiming for it to be more appealing to users to shell out for the annual subscription, as opposed the shorter variants.

It’s a good bet that the prices will rise to roughly the level of Xbox Live Gold subscriptions which currently stand at £5.99 for one month, £14.99 for three months and £39.99 annually.
