We all know the PlayStation 5 is definitely on the way and will likely land in the next couple of years, but official details on the product remain frustratingly thin on the ground.
Launch titles, specs, price, what the damn thing actually looks like; these are all things we’re desperate to know, but Sony is keeping the PS5 pretty close to its chest right now.
Fortunately, we might have just been afforded a massive sneak peek at Sony’s next console thanks to footage shared by the company at the Inter BEE conference in Tokyo.
During the conference Sony showed off their new Crystal LED Display System running Gran Turismo with 120 FPS and in glorious 8K. The video captured below doesn’t really do much to sell the majesty of that, but it’s still pretty impressive.
While this was really more of a showcase for the LED Display System itself, it does have some very interesting implications for what the PS5 could be, especially given the comments made by Gran Turismo creator and Polyphony Digital CEO, Kazunori Yamauchi.
Yamauchi reportedly told Finder.com that the studio is creating assets for GT Sport for future releases on future consoles, claiming that the PS4 Pro assets are already “over specced”.
He said:
It takes six months to create a single car. It’s over-specced for PS4 Pro. So we are building for future versions of the console rather than the one we see today. I think it would be no problem to run it at 8K even.
If Yamauchi’s comments really are referring to the PS5 (which seems the most likely explanation), then Sony’s next console could be an absolute beast, and much more powerful than anyone had expected.
