The PlayStation 4 is officially enjoying one hell of a life. As of December 31, 2018, the console has officially sold more than 91.6 million units globally. That’s a lot

The news was announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment, obviously. Microsoft weren’t likely to tweet the news out really, were they?

It was revealed that over 5.6 million PlayStation 4 units were sold over the Christmas period, helping to get the PS4 even closer to 100 million units sold in its lifetime, a milestone which is looking increasingly likely.

With all those shiny new consoles flying off the shelves, a good number of PS4 games have obviously gone with them. 50.7 million PS4 titles were sold over Christmas, bringing the total number of PS4 games sold since the console’s launch in 2013 to 876 million.

Sony’s recent string of stellar exclusives helped this number along of course, including the excellent Marvel’s Spider-Man. The fastest selling PlayStation exclusive of all time is now at over 9 million copies sold, proving that if you take a globally beloved character and lock him behind a specific console, you are gonna get results.

It’s undoubtedly been a great year for PlayStation owners, especially in terms of exclusive games. Spider-Man and God of War smashed all kinds of critical and commercial expectations, with the latter picking up game of the year at The Game Awards.

We also got Detroit: Become Human, which while divisive, was still an ambitious title with a lot to love. Oh, and there was the Shadow of the Colossus remake, which was obviously gorgeous.

With 2019 we can look forward to Days Gone and (hopefully) Ghosts of Tsushima, as well as a string of cross platform games like Resident Evil 2, Kingdom Hearts 3, and DOOM Eternal.
