A noted analyst predicts that Sony could launch the new machine along with a slimmed down version of the standard PS4 before or during the Tokyo Games Show in September.

Macquarie Securities analyst Damian Thong shared this info with The Wall Street Journal. Sony declined to comment on the matter of a launch date or a slim PS4, those mysterious bastards.

This follows a report from earlier in June that Sony would launch the PS4K before the end of the year.

Of course, this is all nothing but predictions and guesswork at this stage. Very informed guesswork from very intelligent people whose job it is to know all about this kind of stuff, granted – but just keep in mind that it’s still far from confirmed.

As for a slimmed down version of the standard PS4? Well it’s not as if Sony are strangers to such practice with their PlayStation consoles – it’s hardly beyond the realms of possibility.

After months of leaks and speculation, Sony officially confirmed the 4K ready PlayStation (codenamed Neo) just before E3 2016. If you’re curious, you can see the PS4K holds up against a standard PS4 below.

Not to be outdone, Microsoft announced the Xbox One S and a rival to the Neo, called Project Scorpio during E3.

The Xbox One S launches in August, while Project Scorpio should be with us by “Holiday 2017”. It seems the console wars are about to begin again.
