John Marston is ready to roam. Red Dead Online, the multiplayer online mode in Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently in a beta phase.

Between the realistic snow in which your cowboy alter ego could draw any manner of genitalia and the incredible shoot em up gameplay, Red Dead Redemption 2 was one of the most celebrated games of 2018.

So saddle up because there’s a new mode in town.

Rockstar Games is dusting off their newest ten-gallon hat and preparing to give RDR2 some major updates to mark the start of 2019.

Big news for the more sociable gamers among us: This included Gun Rush, a new game mode similar to Fortnite: Battle Royale, the free 100-player PvP mode in Fortnite.

So, prepare for concerned adults across the globe to claim the world as we know it is coming to an end once more, as gamers lose themselves in some blissfully executed online gaming.

The added update landed on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One today (January 11), and lets up to 32 players play at once.

So you won’t quite reach the mass brawl no-holds-barred battles of Fortnite, but there’ll be plenty of opportunity to encounter strangers and the odd animal attack, too.

Like Fortnite: Battle Royale, Gun Rush tosses players into a shrinking battle zone and forces them to search for weapons to survive.

Players can ride solo or join up with a team, and the last squad standing wins the game. Rockstar is developing separate story missions for Red Dead Online, so who knows where they’ll take Marston next.

Future updates will include new story missions, dynamic events, collectible items, and different competitive modes like races.

Rockstar is hoping to introduce more ‘quality of life’ improvements for Red Dead Online, too.

These will include daily challenges, a revised bounty system for aggressive players, and improved player interactions on the online frontier.

Though Red Dead Online is included with every purchase of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar says the online mode is still in a beta phase and will remain so for a few more months.

Prior to the launch of Red Dead Online, Rockstar said it wanted to work alongside the gaming community to build the best online experience this side of the Wild West.

The company released a statement announcing their plans for player collaboration:

We look forward to working with our amazing and dedicated community to share ideas, help us fix teething problems and work with us to develop Red Dead Online into something really fun and innovative.

Load up the pistols and practice your drawing, we’ve got some virtual reality bounties to hunt.
