Capcom has announced the return of two classic modes for the Resident Evil 2 remake. The 4th Survivor and The Tofu Survivor bonus modes were both in the 1998 original, so it’s great to see them back.
In a move that you could argue is atypical of a modern AAA release, both modes come included for free in the game at launch, but you’ll need to unlock them. Unlocking a mode instead of paying for it is what we used to do back in the day, for any kids reading.
The 4th Survivor mode brings back a classic Resi character in the form of Umbrella Security Service special agent HUNK. As the mode suggests, he’s the fourth person to survive the events of Raccoon City, in a canonical standalone story for you to enjoy after beating the main game.
Tofu Survivor is unfortunately a non canonical story chapter that lets you live out the dream of controlling a person-sized piece of tofu. In it, you can only carry and use a combat knife, two green herbs, and one blue herb. Presumably because a piece of tofu using a gun would be absurd.
In the 1998 original, you unlocked The 4th Survivor by completing both of Leon and Claire’s scenarios with an A rank. Meanwhile, The Tofu Survivor, required you to get six A ranks in under two and a half hours.
It’s not been confirmed if the method for unlocking these modes in the remake will be exactly the same, but I’d wager all you need to do now to get them is beat the game.
Resident Evil 2 is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 25. For now, you can enjoy an intense 30 minute “one shot” demo, which some gamers are already speedrunning.
