Hold on to your nostalgia folks, because if new reports are to be believed, the upcoming Nintendo NX will use cartridges like consoles from days of yore. And the 3DS.

While you get over the thoughts of an N64-2.0, it’s worth pointing out that this isn’t the first time it’s been suggested that the NX will use cartridges. But in a new report from the Wall Street Journal, it now seems to be even more likely.

The report states that “people familiar with the matter” expect the console to use cartridges more like the 3DS as opposed to ones like in the NES or N64, thanks to advancements in production of flash memory.

If this does turn out to be true, it’s unclear how Nintendo will get around the huge amounts of memory needed in modern gaming – PS4 and Xbox One games, for example, can take up to 50GB on a disc.

This report comes alongside other suggestions that the NX will actually be a console/handheld hybrid with detachable controllers and the ability to dock it with a television. Pretty gnarly if true.

The Nintendo NX is expected to be with us come March 2017, and will launch with the much anticipated Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
