There’s no denying that the first official trailer for the live-action Sonic The Hedghog movie exists, that’s for sure. I’ve watched it twice now and I’m still not sure if was a fever dream or not.

If you ever wondered what Jim Carrey would look like trying to chase down a weirdly muscular blue CGI hedgehog while Gangster’s Paradise plays in the background, this could just be the film for you. Take a look at the trailer below.

If I’m being completely honest, it’s not looking anywhere near as bad as various internet reactions would have you believe. More than anything, it seems like a pretty harmless kid’s film with Jim Carrey going full Jim Carrey as a cartoonish villain.

With that said, there’s no getting around the fact that Sonic himself looks genuinely creepy. The once lovable cartoon critter has turned into what I can only describe as a toned, slender demon. I wouldn’t let this Sonic near my kids, quite frankly.

So what of the plot? Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) will be teaming up with Green Hills Sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) to try and save the world from various unexplained anomalies. Meanwhile, Jim Carrey’s Dr “Eggman” Robotnik is called in by the military to help out, but slowly becomes obsessed with Sonic over the course of the film and becomes the villain we all know and love.

Presumably he stares into the howling void that is this CGI Sonic’s eyes, realises there’s no point to anything, and commits to be being a fully evil genius.

Sonic The Hedgehog is produced by Paramount Pictures, with Jeff Fowler on directorial duties. You can expect the blue blur to speed into cinemas on November 8, 2019. Are you ready? I don’t think I’m ready.

If you’ll excuse me, I’m going home to hold my Mega Drive.
