Sony May Charge For PS4 Pro Updates

As we all know now, the PS4 Pro is Sony’s new ‘4.5’ console, supporting wonderful 4K and HDR, with a ton of already-released games getting patches to make sure they look great on the new machine.

However, these post release Pro patches (try saying three times fast when you’re drunk) might actually cost us money to access, as revealed by Masayasu Ito, an executive vice president at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Ito told the Japanese website Game Impress Watch (translated by Kotaku) that ‘it will be different for each title’ depending on ‘the thinking of each licensee’ when asked if future updates would cost money.

It would seem that at that point in the interview, Ito was referring to third-party publishers. However, when Game Impress Watch asked him to clarify whether the same would be true for Sony published games, Ito responded; ‘I think it will vary for each one of our titles.’

A whole bunch of games are scheduled to get a PS4 Pro patch, including Uncharted 4, Shadow of Mordor, and The Witness – you can find the full list here.

There is of course, a chance that something has been lost in translation or that Ito is referring to some kind of development cost to upgrade the titles – we’ll have to wait and see how this develops.
