If you’re regretting trading in your original PlayStation for a shiny upgrade, now’s your chance to get back to those timeless games, because Sony are releasing their classic console just in time for Christmas.

With vinyls, vintage clothing and polaroids now firmly back in society, it seems retro is the way to go. Well XBox and Nintendo 3DS can step aside, because the classic PlayStation will be back, just in time for Christmas.

The PlayStation Classic is set to launch on December 3, and with 20 ‘generation-defining’ games in their original format pre-loaded into the system, it’s a gift you can’t go wrong with (for yourself, of course).

The console will cost just $100 (£76), so it’ll set you back much less than your average modern device, especially when you consider the 20 games.

Check it out here:

Although they’re keeping the overall look of the PlayStation the same, Sony have made some upgrades to make sure you get the best vintage gaming experience.

The console is 45 per cent smaller than it was back in its heyday, uses a virtual memory card to save your gameplay, and will connect to modern HDMI outlets.

Of course, the console wouldn’t be complete without controls, so the system comes with two PS1-era replica controllers.

Unfortunately, if you’re still hanging on to some of your PS1 games, you won’t be able to play them in the new release. The console doesn’t take disks because it’s all ‘virtual’ these days, so you’ll be limited to the 20 loaded games, but with Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Ridge Racer Type 4, Jumping Flash and Wild Arms included, you probably won’t need any others anyway.

The other 15 games will be released in due course on the PlayStation Blog – the site gives an insight to the exciting new release, explaining:

Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world.

Developed by then Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics for the first time in their own homes.

The description continues:

Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all.

All of the preloaded games will be playable in their original format.

I know a few people who still have their original playstation, gathering dust in the corner of the room while they wait for the games to become relevant again. This is the moment they’ve been waiting for!

The PlayStation classic is available to preorder now from Best Buy.

Bring on Christmas – can’t wait!
