Square Enix Planning New Tomb Raider Trilogy Not Exclusive To Microsoft

Square Enix CEO Phil Rogers may well have let the cat out of the bag at Gamescom, where he referred to the recent Tomb Raider reboot as a ‘trilogy’.

Square Enix caused a bit of an upset when they announced the eagerly awaited Rise of the Tomb Raider would be a Microsoft exclusive, and to follow the news up by saying it would come to Playstation 4, a year later was a major kick in the teeth to it’s loyal fanbase. But now it looks like that exclusivity might be short lived.

Speaking about the exclusive deal, Rogers has said:

We believe first and foremost this is the right thing to do with Tomb Raider right now. What it’s done for the sake of the studio and the next beat with the Tomb Raider trilogy… But the backlash is–we’ve watched carefully and we believe it’s the right thing to do.

We don’t see this over time becoming an Xbox IP. This is a story and we’ll look back over the Tomb Raider franchise and history, and it will be a chapter where it was a timed-exclusive with Xbox.

Well, that just about confirms it. Obviously Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics haven’t made any official statements, but previous brand director Karl Stewart said that Crystal Dynamic would need multiple games to complete their planned story.

Rise of the Tomb Raider launches on November 10 on Xbox One and Xbox 360 and will come to Windows PC and Playstation 4 in late 2016.
