The original DOOM is an all-time classic that remains to many the definitive first person shooter. It’s brutal as all hell, controls smoother than butter, and totally holds up by today’s standards, in my humble opinion.
If there’s one area where the game hasn’t aged entirely well, it is – understandably – in the visual department. The game was released in 1993 after all, and while the game’s pixellated world doesn’t look bad, it’s just a little bit basic by today’s standards.
I’m sure you won’t be surprised to learn that there’s an impressive new mod that aims fix that. DOOM Remake 4 is actually a collection of mods that, when combined, completely overhauls the classic FPS and transforms it into a game that wouldn’t look out of place if it were released in 2019.
While the collection was first released last year, a new “Experimental Edition” is now available that adds in even more impressive changes, such as better resolution and gorier kills to go along with 3D enemy models, improved lighting, and fancier textures.
Here’s the mod’s official description, via Mod DB:
Have you ever dreamed about seeing DOOM in HD or with modern feel? Well today you are lucky, Doom Remake 4 is basically a compilation of mods that make it look more polished and aesthetic. It brings you: High Resolution Textures with PBR materials, 3D models of every object and enemy, New HUD (modified DoomVisor), Brutal mods with plenty of blood and gibs.
To be clear, the improvements made to DOOM are visual only. There have been absolutely no tweaks to maps, weapons, enemies, or gameplay. After all, why would you mess with perfection? The only thing this mod does it help DOOM to bloom as the beautiful, demon infested flower it always was.
Check it out in action below.
If you fancy checking this mod out for yourself, do be aware that it’s quite demanding, so you’ll need a fairly hefty PC to be able to keep up with it. If you feel your machine is up to the task, you can head here and follow the installation instructions.
