Since it was announced last week, Mafia III has been at the forefront of everybody’s mind. Now we have the cinematic reveal trailer and a storyline, it’s shaping up to be awesome.
Set in the 1960s in swampy New Orleans you play as Vietnam veteran Lincoln Clay, who must fight against the Italian mobs and carve out a place for himself in the historical city. Lincoln was part of a black mob that once had ties with the Italian’s, but after a falling out, a bitter feud has erupted between them.
Mafia III tackles a number of key issues including racism and family, as Lincoln struggles with his violent tenancies, Vietnam flashbacks and a lust to belong.
The game is set in the same decade as the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and amidst growing unrest of the Vietnam war. As Lincoln is both black and a veteran, you can expect plenty of tough scenes in the story.
Lincoln has a small crew of loyal followers who act as support and will be able to help out during missions. Cassandra, a black woman, Burke, an Irish thug, and a familiar face, Vito from Mafia II. Unfortunately you won’t be able to control anybody but Lincoln, and it’s unclear how the other characters will relate to the story just yet.
Mafia III will launch in 2016 but has no specific date, and will release on Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Windows PC. Check out the trailer and Gamespot’s interview and gameplay footage below.
