Fresh off the back of playing a teenage Spider-Man in Far From Home, Homecoming, and the Avengers films, it seems Tom Holland has got his next project lined up already.
Sony have finally made firm plans for a big screen adaptation of their video game Uncharted, and are reportedly lining up Holland to play the lead character, Nathan Drake.
The studio have set a release date of December 18, 2020, with 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg at the helm.
As there have been more than a few iterations of the game, including Drake’s Trail, Eye of Indra, Drake’s Fortune and The Fourth Labyrinth, it’s as yet unclear what storyline the studio will focus on.
However, with a new Indiana Jones movie reportedly on the way, it’ll be interesting to see how Sony approach the tale of a heroic treasure hunter obsessed with uncovering various historical artefacts and mysteries.
A film version of Uncharted has reportedly been in the works since 2008, when producer Avi Arad said he was working with Sony to develop it.
Actor Nathan Fillion was in mind to take the part of Drake, even starting a campaign on Twitter in 2010 to encourage fans to support him in landing the role. In the same year, however, Mark Wahlberg expressed his own desire to be the film, telling MTV he was excited by what David O. Russell – who was behind the script at the time – had in store.
However, in 2011 it was reported that David O. Russell had dropped out of writing and directing the film, with the studio looking for a new screenwriter.
Since then, a number of different writers and directors have been attached to the script, including Divergent director Neil Burger, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, writer Mark Boal and Safe House scriptwriter David Guggenheim.
In January this year however, it was finally announced Dan Tractenberg would be taking the reins of the project, and was lining up Tom Holland for the lead after his success as Spider-Man, Variety reports.
The most recent draft of the script was reportedly penned by Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker.
Shawn Levy, from the game’s developers Naughty Dog, told Variety late last year:
We now have a very good script and we have our star in Tom Holland. That is now subject to schedule and additional casting. But I would say as of right now, that seems to be the most near horizon. And it’s a movie I’m very excited about.
Uncharted is set to be hit cinemas on December 18, 2020.
